Now, first and foremost, to be eligible for the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must achieve ratings in five IIHS crashworthiness tests, where "good" is the highest rating. These five crash tests measure the vehicle's overall performance and integrity in the most common crash situations, including small overlap front crash, moderate overlap front crash, and side crash. Naturally, the new Hyundai Elantra scored high marks in its IIHS crashworthiness testing.

However, crash testing was far from the only test the new Hyundai Elantra underwent to earn its IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation. In addition, IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award-winners must pass front crash prevention testing with a score of advanced or superior, as well as headlight testing with an acceptable or good rating. Happily, the new Hyundai Elantra excels in those regards as well. Outfitted with an available Automatic Emergency Braking System with Pedestrian Detection, the Hyundai Elantra can scan the road ahead of you for obstacles, and automatically apply the brakes if it detects an imminent potential collision. In addition, its High Beam Assist system allows you to keep your high beams on for nighttime driving, and the system will automatically turn them on and off to avoid dazzling drivers in the oncoming lane.

With exceptional safety technologies and exemplary crashworthiness ratings, it's easy to see how the new Hyundai Elantra pulled ahead of many of its competitors to earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Award this year. That said, the features we've listed above are just a few of the innovative safety technologies available with the new Hyundai Elantra.
